Brandon
Mahrt
was one of three North Pole Aquatic Club swimmers to make finals
at the Western Zone Championships. Brandon set three state records
during prelims, and bettered two of them during finals. In the 11-12
boys 100 meter back, Brandon posted a prelim time of 1:11.29 (finishing
seventh in 1:12.03). Next, he swam the 50 fly in 30.46, lowering
the new state mark to 30.12 in finals (finishing sixth). The final
two state marks came in the 100 fly, when he qualified in 1:09.20
and swam a seventh-place time in finals of 1:08.29.
Brandon's
teammates also performed well at Western Zones. Kreg
Lesage cruised
to a 2:19.53 in the 13-14 boys 200 meter fly during prelims. In
finals, Kreg raced
to a fourth-place 2:16.20, setting an Alaska state record and a
National Age Group Top 16 time. Karin
Wagner placed sixth in the 15-16 girls
50 meter free with a 28.51. Treg
McLaughlin also
swam well in the 15-16 boys age group even though he did not make
finals.
